“Like a slice of bread with two sides I have my urban side and my rancher side. Most people only know me in shiny shoes, with a suit and tie as Pastor Van, Mid-America Union youth and church ministries director. That’s my daily dress. When heading to the country of my childhood I slip on my black elephant cowboy boots, blue jeans, country shirt, a pair of leather gloves and don a cowboy hat; still the same man on the inside.
I enjoy:
• Worship
• Talking about Jesus
• Notating music
• Creating sound tracks
• Cooking German ethnic food
• Riding motorcycles and horses
• Gardening
• Tracking stocks
• Listening to other people’s journey
• Planning events
• Avid reader
• Consolidating a coalition
• Being a friend
“I love the country quietness of a dark night in the open prairie as my eyes accustom to the starlit sky. The coyote’s howl nearby sends a cognitive strain as I wonder if that howl is a musical e-flat. The reported cougar in the area may be downwind eyeing me like an aggressive church member; as I wonder across the barren plain like Buck Rogers lost in space. At last, alone with God, no prying eyes. The cool breeze fresh with the scent of fertile Earth, blows life up my nostrils. I collapse to my knees hidden in quiet serenity as my soul flickers back to life and I converse with God. It will be light soon. Where’s the North Star? Let’s head for home, put on shiny shoes, a suit and tie. Somebody out there is lost. The night is far spent. Jesus will be coming soon.
